Here’s some of that company. Johnny Depp just turned 50, the big 5-0. George Clooney had his 50th birthday, the Big 5-0, in 2011. Demi Moore, bless her heart, is 50, the Big 5-0, whether she wants to be or not.
And then there’s me, Peggy Browning. I had my 50th birthday in October, 2005. So, yes…I’m well over 50 now. It’s been my best decade so far.On my 50th birthday, I did a life review. Due to a personal tragedy, (the loss of my middle child) I had stopped living. Oh, I went to work…I bought groceries…I made sure that my daughter finished high school…you know, all those things that I was required to do.
But I wasn’t really living, you know?
On my 50th birthday, I sat on the front porch of my house, chain-smoking Benson & Hedges 100s and drinking coffee. I watched people hurrying down the street, doing what they needed to do…living their lives. And I decided right then and there that I should start living again.
It was my choice.
I could continue to lie on the couch and watch CNN for the next 25 years of my life, grousing about how the entire world had gone to hell in a handbasket. Or I could stand up and go on with Life.
I chose Life. I chose to live in honor of my son, not mourning his loss, but celebrating his life.
I made a bucket list…or what I prefer to call a Life List. I wrote down 51 things that I would do in the coming year…from birthday to birthday. I chose 51 things because I was living in my 51st year.
And then I did everything on that list. I slowly and painfully returned to the land of the living. That first year was a rough one and some of the ones following it have been rough, too.
The Big 5-0 was a real game changer for me. I painted my bathroom; I went on a road trip; I held my first grandchild; I laughed and smiled again.
I made some hard decisions. I changed jobs and went back to teaching. Then I quit that job.
I eventually followed a life-long dream and started writing.
And then I wrote a novel, entitled…what else…The Big 5-0.
I wrote it because I thought that surely I wasn’t the only woman out there that was starting over at the age of 50. I wanted other women to be encouraged, to feel what I did, to go on…yes, to start over. To live Life and enjoy it, even if Life is turned upside down.
Oh, I wrote two other books as well. But The Big 5–0 is my baby…the book I was meant to write.
The Big 5-0 is about a woman named Matilda Mason, who wants more in her Life…more joy, more adventure, more love. When her life is turned upside down, she gets the chance to make the same choice I made. Live Life or just keep on doing the same old thing.
The Big 5-0 is the first book in a series about Matilda Mason…good mother, obedient daughter, caring wife, and darn good garden reporter.
I finished The Big 5-0 in May, 2013. After many re-writes, re-edits, and re-formats…It went live on amazon.com today. It’s available in e-book on Kindle and in paperback.
Please buy The Big 5-0 and follow along as Matilda Mason learns to live her very best life. I’ve got a lot more living to do, more Life Lists to complete, and an over-due electric bill to pay. I need the money!
I’ve written outlines for nine more books about Matilda, so watch for those too.
The second book in the series is titled Waltzing Matilda. There’s no date for publication yet, but I’m writing it now.
And P.S….My other previously published books, Fifty Odd: Viewing Life After 50 Through Rose-Colored Bifocals and Square Peg’s Words of Wisdom are also available at amazon.com in e-book and paperback (Please buy them, too!) Thank you for your support!
And please read about Matilda…I think you’ll like her.
