4 Critical Ingredients in Skin Care Over 50

To look its best your skin needs care and attention at every age, but this becomes even more important as the skin ages. As your skin loses its natural elasticity and vitality the right products can step in and keep your skin looking its best.

Finding the right products can be quite a challenge though. The majority of skin care products are designed for youthful skin. You can also find that narrowing down the many anti-aging products to a few good choices is no easy task either. To help you find skin care products that will really benefit your skin after 50, we’ve created a list of important ingredients to watch out for. Check the labels of your favorite products and choose those that contain some or all of these age defying ingredients.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: the sun wreaks havoc on your skin. UV radiation leads to sun damage, dark spots, and in some cases even skin cancer. Choose a moisturizer that contains SPF and wear it every day. How much SPF do you need on a daily basis? Dr. Susan Goodlerner, a dermatologist in Torrance, CA recommends choosing a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 for daily use, more if you’ll be in the sun for extended periods.

She explains, “While SPF 30 is adequate if enough sunscreen is applied, most of us don’t use a sufficient amount. You should apply a full tablespoon to your face alone, an entire shot glass to cover your body. Find a moisturizer with at least SPF 30 and use it daily. On those days when you’ll be spending time in the sun, I typically recommend a higher SPF. It is never too late to protect your skin.”

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring protein that is known to keep skin plump and firm. As the body ages, its natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases, which leads to wrinkling, sagging skin and other age related skin problems. Hyaluronic acid is very effective at fighting the signs of aging. In fact, many of the dermal injectable fillers are comprised of HA. It can also be applied topically.
Since the name includes the word acid, many people assume that hyaluronic acid will be harsh or drying to the skin when in fact the opposite is true. It is very non-irritating, moisturizing, and helps keep skin hydrated. Every skin type, even oily, can benefit from this wonderful anti-aging ingredient.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

The gentle alpha hydroxy acids help break down dead skin, allowing the old cells to slough off and revealing fresh, new skin underneath. This can smooth skin, even skin tone, and even shrink the appearance of large pores. Stripping away old cells also allows moisturizers and other anti-aging products to penetrate more deeply into the skin and provide a greater benefit. There are several different AHAs, but two common ones to look for are glycolic acid and lactic acid. You can choose a moisturizer with AHAs formulated right in or can choose to do an at home peel using You can choose a moisturizer with AHAs formulated right in or can choose to do an at home peel using them once every week or two. Just watch your skin for irritation and decrease your usage if you notice redness or peeling. For a more intensive AHA treatment, try a chemical at your dermatologist’s office.

Retinoids, a vitamin A derivative, increase your body’s collagen production, helping skin to keep its structure. They also unclog pores, making for smoother skin with fewer breakouts. The most effective retinoids are typically only available by prescription (see your dermatologist to get one), but you can find some good products over the counter as well. It may longer to see results when using over the counter products.

Keep in mind not to use AHAs in conjunction with retinoids because the acid will deactivate the retinoid. Try applying AHAs in the morning and retinoids at night for best results.

Give your skin the boost it needs to fight the signs of aging with these essential ingredients for flawless skin after 50.
